Americans are clueless about Celsius, which is why I used Fahrenheit (with its advantage of the handy ranges of "temperatures will be in the 70s," etc.). Everyone here knows what the variance by 10 degrees feels like, and it works for us. Why a scale based on the boiling point of water should be relevant to earthly weather baffles me. Celsius is used here only in science, where it makes more sense.Reg / Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07539868524489903682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-485024529736067754.post-73087205960346242542010-09-01T04:41:24.016-06:002010-09-01T04:41:24.016-06:00I have cursed you unjustly. Every time I came to a significant temperature in the first book (and there were many) I had to go through "Minus thirty-two, times five over nine. Oh, for God's sake, these characters are Swedish! Mr. Celsius himself was Swedish! Why would they be using Fahrenheit? Minus thirty-two, take half the result...." For me, it broke the illusion of following a story set in Sweden, and made me think about irrelevant things. A real problem for me as a reader and no doubt many others.

Isn't the United States the last country still using Fahrenheit? In Canada, Celsius came in close to forty years ago. It is astonishing that the publisher's decisions seem to be so random. Is this typical?Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16563408330816891907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-485024529736067754.post-19422713084905454482010-01-12T09:46:01.908-07:002010-01-12T09:46:01.908-07:00It's in Fahrenheit because I originally transl...It's in Fahrenheit because I originally translated the books to American English, hoping for a U.S. publisher. After they were bought by Quercus in London, they were heavily edited. Odd that they left in the Fahrenheit! As for 'sop', most of my translations are done originally for British publishers, so I throw in plenty of sodding sops, believe me.Reg / Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07539868524489903682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-485024529736067754.post-75179985946052207382010-01-12T07:28:02.897-07:002010-01-12T07:28:02.897-07:00Thanks for the map--so helpful.
